The Wasatch Range
The Wasatch Range (/ˈwɑːsætʃ/ WAH-satch) is a mountain range in the Western United States that stretches approximately 160 miles from the Utah-Idaho border, south through central Utah . The range makes up the western edge of the greater Rocky Mountains. Its eastern edge is marked by the Great Basin region. The northern extension of the Wasatch Range, the Bear River Mountains, extends into Idaho.
According to the Utah History Encyclopedia, Wasatch in Ute means “mountain pass” or “low pass over high range.” According to Native American linguistics specialist, William Bright, the mountains were named for a Shoshoni leader who was named with the Shoshoni term wasattsi, meaning “blue heron.” ~Wikipedia
